A galvanizing company's expertise has seen it called upon to play a part in a major supermarket expansion.
Worksop Galvanizing, part of Wedge Group Galvanizing, has galvanized more than 350 tonnes of structural steelwork used to construct a new customer car park at Asda’s store in Weymouth town centre.
Dorset-based car park specialist Bourne Parking Limited has used the steel to build a twin-deck car park with space for more than 300 vehicles. The three-level structure has been constructed on land adjacent to the supermarket, which it will be linked to by a first-floor footbridge. Measuring 60 metres by 80 metres, the car park design is based around a 16 metre by 2.4 metre steel frame, with each section of the frame equal to one parking space.
Paul Robinson, Commercial Manager of Worksop Galvanizing, commented:"At more than 350 tonnes, this was a significant project for us, and one that we were particularly keen to be involved with. Galvanizing the steelwork used as columns and beams in the construction of the car park will ensure the frame is given a long-lasting protection against possible rust and corrosion."
"The car park was built using our Montex modular system," Dave Lehan, Fabrication Manager of Bourne Group, revealed. "This sees the structure assembled sequentially in various stages, until it reaches its full height. This enables materials to be delivered on a 'just in time basis', reducing the need for on-site storage, and causes minimal disruption during construction. Worksop Galvanizing's excellent service in turning around such a vast amount of steel in a prompt and reliable manner has helped us deliver the project on time."
Wedge Group Galvanizing is the largest hot dip galvanizing organisation in the UK with a history dating back over 150 years. With 14 plants strategically placed across the country, they offer a truly national galvanizing service.
