Six members of staff at Cardiff based Boyes Rees Architects are planning a gruelling cycle across Wales to raise money for Wales' children’s hospital.

Chris Jones, David Davis, Lewis Ham, Paulo Santos, Richard King and Pratap Mekapothu of Boyes Rees Architects will be joined by members of staff from Interserve, Track Consulting, Opus International and Spie Matthew Hall, for the challenge on the 10 - 11 June.

The cyclists are in regular training in preparation for the ride which will cover 340 miles in total. The Boyes Rees team will start at 4.30 in the morning and cycle from Pembrokeshire to Cardiff via Brecon - a distance of 130 miles, whilst the Interserve team will cycle from Holyhead to Cardiff in a relay with one overnight stop. The two teams will meet at Storey Arms between Brecon and Merthyr Tydfill.

Boyes Rees is the principal architect on the second and final phase of the Children's Hospital for Wales in Cardiff and is a member of Interserve’s design team along with Track Consulting, Opus International and Spie Matthew Hall who are all engaged in the design and construction of the new hospital. It will house an intensive care unit, operating theatres and surgical wards. Preparatory building work is underway at the University Hospital for Wales, Heath Park.


The architects were also behind the design of the first phase of the Children’s Hospital which was officially opened by Hollywood actress Catherine Zeta Jones and her husband actor Michael Douglas in 2006.

David Davis, associate at Boyes Rees said: "The idea of the cycle challenge covering the length and breadth of Wales was to emphasise that the Children’s Hospital is a children’s hospital for the whole of Wales.

"The hospital provides an essential facility to treat seriously ill children, enabling them to receive the best treatment in their own country.

"The Noah’s Ark Appeal is a great cause, and when you're working so closely with a project, we wanted to be able to give something back and lend our support.

"We've been training really hard, trying to cram in as much cycling as possible in the evenings and at weekends. We have set ourselves a fundraising target of £10,000 and have already raised over £3,000."

The Noah's Ark Appeal was launched in 2000 to find money to build Wales' only dedicated children's hospital. It has been asked to raise £7m for vital projects in phase two, which is aiming to provide pioneering equipment like an open MRI scanner, as well as a hydrotherapy pool and an enclosed garden.
