A special topping out event to mark the next key milestone in the building of the new Five Islands School in Old Town, St Mary’s in the Isles of Scilly took place yesterday.
Assisted by two students, Isles of Scilly Council chairman Mike Hicks and chief executive Philip Hygate joined Kier Western operations director David Snell to lead the ceremony. Together, they helped guide the new bell tower into position on the roof.
Mr Hicks commented: "I'm delighted to be part of this exciting new project and investment in the future education of the children of the Isles of Scilly. The marvellous opportunities that this presents to the community, and the stark contrast with my own school days at Carn Thomas, could not be more different. Although enjoyable days for me, this new build far outweighs anything the islands have had to offer in the past."
The new school has been designed by Grainge Architects and is being project managed by Mace.
