Planning Permission Granted For New Sainsbury's Store

Members of the Development Control Committee (South and East) voted in favour of the revised outline planning application for a new Sainsbury's store subject to a legal agreement and conditions.

Before a decision can be issued by the council the application has to be sent to central government to consider whether the decision should be taken by the Secretary of State.

Chair of the Committee Cllr Lesley Alexander said: "This application has generated a huge amount of debate throughout the city over the last year since the first application went in. We heard excellent contributions from both sides of the argument.

"Members tonight felt that the applicant had addressed some of the concerns raised by the committee when it refused last year - in particular to travel and sustainability. We were very sympathetic to the retail impact concerns raised by traders, residents, and our own planning officers. But we felt that on balance the positive effects of regeneration on the South Bristol area outweigh the potential harm to the Bedminster centres.

"We therefore concluded that we should grant outline permission, on the basis of the applicants meeting some key conditions."
