Kier Eastern has won a £1.4 million contract to design & build a new wing to a banana ripening centre near Stansted for client Winfresh.

Kier started work on the facility at Winfresh's existing warehouse on High Cross Lane East, Little Canfield last month.

As well as housing for banana ripening rooms, the new three-storey building will provide offices and space for the production of fruit-based products. Outside, Kier Eastern will provide revised car parking areas and the project will also enhance the local environment with hedgerow reinforcement and new wildlife habitats being included in the scheme.

Kier Eastern Director Nick Bache commented: "We are especially pleased to be involved in this negotiated project with Winfresh as it continues a relationship first established over 10 years ago. The Kier team has been involved in the design development from the scheme’s inception and that has allowed us to respond to the client’s changing needs to satisfy the food sector. We look forward to celebrating the scheme's success with the new product lines that Winfresh will produce in the facility."

The Kier team, which includes Paul Johnson Architects and structural engineer Brand Leonard, is scheduled to complete the six-month contract in June.
