It is estimated that they will reduce energy costs by as much as 50 per cent each year.
There is a wind turbine on site which will generate around 13 per cent of the electricity used at the centre each year.
Rainwater is being harvested on site to flush toilets. It is estimated that 40 per cent less water will be used annually.
The building is heat-efficient – saving heating costs by around 12 per cent per year.
There are many other energy-saving features such as lighting controls and a biomass boiler which are making a significant contribution to the savings.
Leicestershire County Council prides itself on providing high-quality, value for money services. Saving energy and money was a key consideration for the state-of-the-art new building.
The £13 million Melton Vale Post 16 Centre, which can be abbreviated to MV16, opened this term as part of Leicestershire County Council’s £45 million reorganisation of education in Melton Mowbray and the Vale of Belvoir.
The first students transfered from the sixth form at King Edward VII School, which is on the same site.
The exciting new centre opened eight months earlier than planned due to the speedy progress made on the new building.
The students will be joined by current Year 11 students at Long Field School, John Ferneley College and Belvoir High School once they finish their studies at their respective schools and move up to the centre in the autumn, 2011 term.
