Jackson Green Engineering have now completed the repair, updated with new locks and drop bolts and rehanging of the main entrance gates, front and side, of St. John's Church on the Stratford Road in Sparkhill, Birmingham.
They presented quite a challenge as the materials are of a different composition to that which is commonly used today. The method of manufacture involved no welding when they were first made over 100 years ago and is amazing what they managed to do with very primative tools and machines compared to today.
The snow hampered our efforts to refit the gates but the easing in the weather gave us a perfect window to complete the work.
One of the staff at the church made a comment to express their delight at the ease of using the "new gates" and was quite surprised when it was revealed they were in fact the old gates given a new lease of life.
