RES To Bring Green Jobs And Boost Economy

UK renewable energy company has announced plans to regenerate Alexandra Dock site.

The project will generate green electricity for homes and businesses as well as bringing permanent local jobs to Sefton, Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area and an investment of approximately £300m. The project will be 100 to 150MW in size depending on the outcome of the initial feasibility studies.

Johanna Doyle, Project Manager for RES commented: "We are delighted to make this announcement and look forward to working with Peel Ports and local and regional stakeholders to deliver this exciting project. We have chosen the Alexandra Dock site as it allows us to bring about 80% of the biomass fuel to the site by ship. This will help to ensure that road deliveries to the site are minimised while using the skills and expertise that exist within the Port and local area. This project will contribute to wider regeneration and bring secure jobs to the region.

"The North West has a highly skilled workforce that we can draw upon and we will be using local contractors and service providers where possible. We will work hard to involve the local communities in our development plans and look forward to hearing their views."

The proposed biomass power plant on Alexandra Dock will:
  • Create green collar jobs for Sefton and the wider Liverpool City Region - provide opportunities for

local consultants during the development phase, local contractors during the construction phase and

permanent jobs for engineers and other disciplines once operational
  • Use the Port for the transport of fuel, helping to secure and diversify its plans for growth
  • Ensure that the local community benefits directly from the project through the establishment of an annual community fund
  • Generate clean, green electricity for the equivalent of 170,000 to 250,000 homes every year
  • Cut emissions of CO2, the main greenhouse gas, by 300,000 to 450,000 tonnes annually
  • Help to reduce the impacts of climate change now and for future generations
  • Provide secure and reliable power through the use of tried-and-tested technology and an abundant and renewable fuel source
