The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has welcomed Derek Bostock as its new National President. Derek was elected as National President at the FMB’s National Conference at the Royal York Hotel in York.
Derek takes over from Ron Storer, who served as National President for the last two years. Derek joined the FMB in 1981 becoming Nottinghamshire and District Branch President in 1984; elected to the FMB National Council in 1990; and Regional President of Yorkshire and Trent in 1993. Derek has spent the last four years as FMB National Vice President. He began his career in construction by working for J Searson Ltd of Sutton in Ashfield as a trainee quantity surveyor, eventually becoming an Assistant Director. Twenty years later, Derek established his own building company. In 2002 he set up HBC Building Management Ltd, a company specialising in estimating and quantity surveying for builders and civil engineering contractors throughout the Yorkshire and Humberside area.
Accepting the role of FMB National President, Derek said: "It is an honour to be selected as National President and a role I will carry out with the upmost determination to ensure that construction, particularly small and medium sized businesses like my own, are considered by government when making decisions that affect housing, infrastructure and the economy. I also believe there is a need for an umbrella organisation across the SME construction sector and I would like to see the FMB leading on this initiative. Such a grouping would enable SME organisations to share resources and expertise with the aim of creating a stronger, louder voice for the construction industry."
