An independent planning inspector has dismissed an appeal by Community Base against refusal of advertising consent.

In February Brighton & Hove's Planning Committee refused consent for the 9.4 metre square advertisement on the side of the Community Base building in Queens Road on the grounds that it would be a visually dominant feature within the street scene and detract from the visual amenities of the area.

A majority on the committee ruled that it would have an adverse impact on the character and appearance of both the North Laine Conservation Area and the West Hill Conservation Area.

The proposal was contrary to several local planning policies, as well as planning guidance on the siting of advertisements.

Councillor Lynda Hyde,Cchairman of the planning committee, said: "We are pleased the inspector has agreed with our decision. We considered the application on its merits and the decision was made on planning grounds."
