Young people in west Hull are celebrating the start of the construction of a purpose built Youth Centre next to St John's Church on St.George's Road.
The new facility, which will be known as 'Network - Young People's Centre' (NYPC), is replacing a derelict church hall and will serve the needs of over 1,500 young people.
Local community organisation, Hessle Road Network, will manage the new facility, which will provide daytime alternative learning services and evening recreational activities for 9 to 21 year olds, as well as providing social facilities for the St.John's church on Sunday mornings.
The facility will comprise large, glass roofed café area, with youth training and general activity space, including media and arts/craft area, sports area and external stage/performance space and urban allotments.
The 'Network - Young People's Centre' has been developed by Hessle Road Network in partnership with St John's Church, Hull Forward and Hull City Council.
Over £1.2 million has been raised to cover construction costs. Major funders include the Youth Capital Fund Plus (Department for Education funding administered by Hull City Council), Hull Forward, Hull City Council, Hull Primary Care Trust, Biffa and rugby charity, Wooden Spoon.
Local construction company, Hobson and Porter, started work on the new facility on 5 July with demolition of the church hall and site clearance. Design work has been undertaken by Beverley-based, Salt Architects.
