Work is now underway to build 115 new affordable quality homes in Southampton.
As part of the Gantry development at the Mayflower Theatre, a new 'get in' and scene dock facility on the western side of the theatre is being created. This will open up access to the much loved theatre, tailoring it for modern day large scale productions.
The second phase of project, which is being led by the council working closely with First Wessex and Drew Smith Ltd, has seen work begin on more than 100 new affordable homes.
Councillor Royston Smith, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: "The Gantry is part of the city’s renaissance vision to create a vibrant and exciting city centre. We are creating stronger and more distinctive neighbourhoods and places where people will want to live and work.
"This is part of our overarching plan to bring more jobs and homes to the city and support growth in Southampton as a regional centre within a prosperous South Hampshire.
"This is an important step in providing more quality affordable homes for the hardworking residents of our city. We are working closely with the Homes and Communities Agency, First Wessex and Drew Smith to build these quality and sustainable homes."
The development, comprising of one and two bedroom apartments, will be built in three distinct blocks each with their own entrances and varying skyline profiles. Areas of greenery and soft landscaping will also be introduced in what is otherwise a concrete urban environment.
It will help to provide a desirable living environment which scores highly in terms of sustainability, quality of housing and transport facilities, including 40 parking spaces and cycle storage and was produced following a full public consultation.
The project has been funded and made possible by the Homes and Communities Agency, who has provided around £6m through the National Affordable Housing Programme and the Low Carbon Infrastructure Fund.
