Cabinet members at Chesterfield Borough Council have given the green light to a multi-million pound boost to ensure that more Council tenants get their homes brought up to the Decent Homes Standard more quickly.
The £35 million improvement programme will be delivered over the next three years to upgrade kitchens, bathrooms, central heating, roofs and other key improvements.
Cllr Tony Rogers, Lead Member for Homes and Neighbourhoods at the Council said: "I'm really pleased that Cabinet colleagues have supported me in the release of this money. For 2010 we will spend £5million from the budget to accelerate our housing improvement programme.
"We will also work closely with tenants so they can play an active role in choosing designs and colour schemes for properties where possible."
The Decent Homes Standard is set by the government and to meet the Standard all Council owned and managed properties must have reasonably modern facilities, be warm and weatherproof.
