Gareth Bacon, Environment Spokesman for the London Assembly Conservative Group, has hit out at "tokenistic" proposals to build a mini-wind farm in the Olympic Park that will generate only enough energy to power 310 computers.

Despite the seven turbines reportedly costing the taxpayer £140,000, an environmental impact assessment admits that wind farm is likely to generate no energy at all at night and if there are high winds it will have to be turned off because of noise.

The turbines will generate a mere 0.28 per cent of the Park's total energy requirements.

Commenting, Mr Bacon said: "It is simply astonishing that public money can be wasted on such a meaningless gesture, especially during a national financial crisis. If these wind turbines cannot provide value for money they should be scrapped, and the money put to better use."
