Professor Sir Alec Jeffreys, pioneer of DNA fingerprinting, will officially open Leicester's Soar Valley Community College today, 21 April.

He will tour the school and perform the official opening ceremony, before giving a master class to the school's sixth-form students.

Soar Valley, a maths and computing specialist college, is one of the first four schools in the city to be rebuilt as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The £21 million building opened in June last year. It includes open teaching areas lit by natural light, a theatre, recording studio, and new cricket pitch.

Teachers are able to take lessons in different learning environments, including the new ecology garden located by the brook running through the site.

Mel Berry, Principal of Soar Valley said: "We now have a building that matches our expectations, enabling the school and its students to go from strength to strength. We are really proud of the way our vision and objectives have led to the iconic exterior design, but more importantly the interior design allows us to adapt to future curriculum changes and support 'anytime, anywhere' learning and make it a reality."
