A Surrey school building is in line for a prestigious architecture prize.

Christ's College in Guildford has been shortlisted for this year's Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Awards, which recognise excellence in architectural design. It could be nominated for the prestigious RIBA Stirling Prize if it wins the South East region award on 20 May.

London-based architects DSDHA designed Christ's College and the nearby Pond Meadow School, which were both officially opened by The Duke of Edinburgh on the same day in July last year. Pond Meadow, which caters for pupils with severe learning difficulties, won a RIBA Award last year. Surrey County Council and the Church of England-appointed governing body are responsible for Christ's College.

Peter Martin, Surrey County Council Cabinet Member for Children and Learning, said: "Christ's College was designed and built to ensure the students get the best possible support and educational opportunities. It is fantastic that such an esteemed body as the RIBA agrees that its design and layout merits being singled out in this way. Architects DSDHA deserve high praise for their work."

The South East region projects are being judged by John Lyall, of John Lyall Architects, Andy Sedgwick from Arup and the regional chairman of GWP Architects Graham Whitehouse.
