Laboratory flooring at the University of Huddersfield has been transformed thanks to TilePlans PVC interlocking floor tiles.
The university put various tiles and flooring surfaces through a rigorous health and safety test before choosing a PVC floor tile from the TilePlans range.
A soft compound floor tile was chosen because it is better to walk on and to prevent slipping for health and safety reasons. A soft compound tile also gives acoustic flooring benefits.
The automotive laboratory has a wind tunnel for research and equipment to test engines, suspensions, and forces on car wheels as well as for testing engine efficiency using different types of fuels or biofuels.
TilePlans PVC interlocking floor tiles were preferred to other flooring solutions to keep disruption to the laboratory’s equipment and activities to a minimum during installation.
Dennis Town, Technical Services Manager for the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, said: "We tested various tiles. The TilePlans representative was here while they were tested.
"Our health and safety officer came down and showed how they would test. We had various choices. Remove the floor paint, clean, and repaint. That would have meant disruption and having to take everything up so that really wasn't an option.
"We could have gone for a non-slip lino but that is expensive and would have meant problems cutting around equipment so at the end the tiles were the ideal solution."
TilePlans conducted a survey of the laboratory floor and completed health and safety assessments on both product supply and installation before installing the PVC interlocking floor tiles.
Red tiles were used for the majority of the laboratory flooring with dark green tiles being deployed to distinguish walkways. TilePlans special interlocking clear logo tiles were also used to add messages within the laboratory flooring. Logo tiles can be used to add health and safety signs or mssages within a floor.
The University of Huddersfield automotive laboratory is one of several laboratory flooring projects using TilePlans PVC interlocking floor tiles to meet health and safety regulations.
Meeting health and safety regulations has also been an important factor for industrial customers using TilePlans PVC interlocking floor tiles and some have deployed 'line marker' tiles to distinguish zones within the floor.
