New Welsh Assembly Government funding worth more than £2.3million to modernise Bryn y Neuadd Hospital, Llanfairfechan, Gwynedd has been announced by Health Minister Edwina Hart.

The funding will enable the electrical infrastructure to be replaced. It will also be used to install new high efficiency gas boilers.

The hospital, which was built in 1971, has expanded and has a range of facilities including an education department, children’s unit, recreation hall and care for people with learning disabilities and those requiring long-term continuing health care.

Work is expected to start in April and be completed by February 2011.

Mrs Hart said: "This new investment will support the future development of the hospital and enable it to increase capacity when required. The new efficient boiler will help to reduce running costs of the hospital in the long-term and help the Health Board to meet Government targets for energy reduction. The new electrical equipment will reduce the risk of an electrical failure.

"This investment is in addition to £2.1million funding announced last year to develop a unit to provide continuing care for people with learning disabilities.

"The unit will support the care of eight people with learning disabilities who have complex and challenging needs, where living in their own homes is not a safe and sustainable option."
