Derbyshire County Council is building a new school in the grounds of Hollingwood Primary School, Chesterfield, while pupils continue lessons in current buildings.
The existing school will be demolished when the new one - with space for 270 primary school pupils and 26 nursery places - is completed in February 2011.
The new school will have more spacious classrooms, a hall and dining area which double as an informal learning area and social space, and outdoor learning areas.
There will also be a multi-use games area for both school and community use, and wireless ICT facilities throughout the new building.
Councillor Mike Longden, Derbyshire County Council Cabinet Member for Education, said: "We're working hard to give every child in Derbyshire the best start in life and suitable accommodation to help them in their studies.
"The new development at Hollingwood Primary School will bring great opportunities for pupils at the school and community - not just for learning in the classroom, but outside too."
Hollingwood is the first new school to be built by the county council under the Primary Strategy for Change programme which will see half of the county's primary schools re-built or refurbished.
