Kier Marriott has started work on a new £6.2m chapel at Crownhill Crematorium for Milton Keynes Council.

The 145-seat chapel, which will sit alongside the existing 100-seat chapel, will be a distinctive, high quality public building with state-of-the-art audio visual facilities and will incorporate a number of innovative environmental benefits.

Several features have been incorporated to enhance sustainability such as natural ventilation units over the chapel, staff accommodation and waiting area. A ground source heat pump system, which uses excess heat to heat water in tanks and radiators, has been incorporated into the design along with intelligently controlled natural ventilation systems.

Cllr Mike Galloway, Cabinet Member with responsibility for growth, said: "This is an important and much needed milestone in the growth of Milton Keynes and this building is good example of sustainable technologies.

"It is important that the area around the new chapel is accessible to visitors and natural wildlife and provides a natural space for remembrance and cremated remains scattering."
