A new skills centre in the grounds of a Leicester community college has been officially opened.

The Braunstone Skills Centre, in the grounds of Fullhurst Community College, comprises two large practical workshops, specialising in construction skills and motor vehicle engineering, along with three teaching spaces with computer equipment and a social area for learners.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for children and schools, Councillor Vi Dempster, said: "This centre is a fantastic example of partnership working and how it can benefit our young people.

"The Braunstone Community Association and the Leicester Economic Partnership raised the funding, Leicester City Council donated the land and Leicester College has provided much of the specialist equipment and staff for the two practical workshops.

"By working together in this way, I know that we have created worthwhile training opportunities that will help our young people to achieve a much brighter future in their working lives."

The opening ceremony for the Braunstone Skills Centre, which was conducted by Leicester West MP Patricia Hewitt, also included the unveiling of a memorial plaque to former Fullhurst student Bradley Whitfield, who died on New Year's Day, 2008.
