Trainee Engineer Builds Career In Housebuilding

A trainee construction engineer is building a career in the housebuilding industry as he works on a major project to build new affordable homes in Leeds.

Matthew Anderton has been taken on by Lovell as a trainee site engineer. Matthew, 36, is honing his skills working on a £5.6 million project to build 61 new affordable homes across three sites in Leeds, a project which Lovell is carrying out for Accent Foundation.

He has rebuilt his career with help from Lovell after being made redundant from his job as a civil engineer with another company in early 2009.

"When I was made redundant, I was in the middle of studying for a National Certificate in Civil Engineering to prepare myself for a managerial role," explained Matthew. "Getting the chance to join Lovell has enabled me to continue to train for a senior position and I’m really enjoying the challenge."

In addition, Matthew is studying for an NVQ Level 5 qualification in Construction Site Management. On site, he is responsible for a variety of tasks including carrying out site inspections, and health and safety inductions for subcontractors.

"It's been fantastic to come straight to a live construction site and learn about all of the different aspects of the housebuilding industry," he added. "I'm relishing the level of responsibility I’ve been given as it’s allowed me to gain managerial experience, which I will need if I’m to achieve my goal of becoming a site manager."
