Laing O'Rourke, in a joint venture with O'Donnell Griffin, has been awarded the A $270 million Sunbury Rail Electrification Project, a major rail infrastructure upgrade in the State of Victoria, Australia.

Victorian State Premier, John Brumby said: "I am delighted to announce that the O'Donnell Griffin & Laing O'Rourke Electrification Joint Venture is the successful contractor to construct the A$270 million Sunbury Electrification project as part of an alliance to improve rail services on the Sydenham-Sunbury corridor."

He said the project was designed to help the transport system cope with the expected population boom in Melbourne's outskirts.

Laing O'Rourke's General Manager Rail, Rob Boulger, said the company was pleased to be a part of the Victorian Government's drive to improve rail travel in Melbourne and to provide an integrated approach to public transport.

The Sunbury Electrification works are due to start in early 2010.
