A new scheme giving teenagers from Leeds College of Building a headstart in construction has been launched by Lovell and housing association Accent Foundation.

The College has worked with Lovell and Accent to launch a pilot scheme to help students studying for the government's Construction and Built Environment Diploma.

Lovell and Accent will mentor students throughout the two-year qualification providing them with vital practical experience through site visits and work experience placements. A recent Ofsted report looking at the construction Diploma nationally called for more construction employers to be involved in delivering the qualification.

"As a company with a strong track record in getting more young people into construction, we were one of the first businesses to support the establishment of the Diploma," said Lovell Regional Training Advisor Sharon Tyer.

"We've worked closely with Accent Foundation and Leeds College of Building to develop this scheme which will provide students with more practical experience and a greater understanding of the industry."

A major benefit of the scheme is the additional practical experience the students will be able to gain.

This will allow them to join construction management training schemes at the end of their Diploma studies, rather than having to complete BTEC or HNC qualifications first.
