Michael Gommersall has won a top accolade for his apprenticeship at Swish Building Products.
He claimed the prize of BPF Apprentice of the Year at an awards dinner in London Hilton Park Lane, organised by PRW (Plastic and Rubber Weekly) Magazine.
Michael beat off stiff competition of over 150 entrants and won the award for the commitment and initiative he has demonstrated so far in his apprenticeship scheme. Judges praised him for his contribution to a number of new initiatives within a health and safety remit as well as improving various processes on site.
"I am delighted that Michael has won this award. It recognises his hard work and commitment to both the practical aspect of his role as well as the academic qualifications he is achieving," Jim Rawson, Chairman of the Epwin Group, said. "He is a credit to our group of companies and presents a perfect argument for why apprentices are still worth investing in."
The award victory also highlights the significant investment made into apprenticeships by Swish Building Products. It places great emphasis on the importance of investing in young people and helping them develop into knowledgeable experts in their field.
"Apprenticeships allow us to enhance a deserving youngster’s career whilst giving us an opportunity to gain a valuable member of staff who is enthusiastic, flexible, willing to learn and who wants to come in and make a difference," Jim Rawson added.
A structured training programme was developed by Swish Building Products for Michael when he joined in August 2007. Practical experience includes time spent in the toolroom and maintenance department. Professional qualifications have also supported this throughout the apprenticeship period.
Academically, he has achieved a NVQ level 2 in engineering manufacturing and a BTEC National Certificate in engineering manufacturing. Ultimately, his aim is to achieve a BSc Hons in engineering.
"A key member of the team, Michael has shown a genuine willingness to learn. He has introduced methodical ideas and suggested improvements to procedures that have made a real impact on day-to-day business and projects," Dave Thomas, Operations Director at Swish Building Products, said.
