Paralympic Venue Gets Planning Permission

Planning permission has been granted for new sporting facilities at Eton Manor, in the north of the Olympic Park.

During the London 2012 Games the venue will host Wheelchair Tennis and be a training area for athletes.

During the Olympic Games the venue will have temporary training pools for participants in Aquatics events. It will have three 50m swimming pools for swimmers, a 30m pool for synchronised swimmers and a 33m pool for water polo players.

After the Games the venue will become a multi-sports facility for the community with a tennis and hockey centre. The facilities will be owned, operated and funded by the Lee Valley Regional Park Authority.

The tennis centre will include four indoor and six outdoor courts. The hockey centre will have two competition pitches. In addition, mountain bike trails forming part of the VeloPark will also extend on to Eton Manor. This will create a wide range of sporting facilities for the local and regional community as well as for elite athletes.

ODA Chairman John Armitt said: "Eton Manor is steeped in sporting history. In the early 1900s it was a community sport facility. Later it became Eton Manor Boys’ Club and Old Boys’ Club, and it quickly gained a reputation as an elite sporting association.

"We will be strengthening this sporting legacy and bringing it into the 21st century by providing a unique mix of sports facilities for athletes and the local community."
