Olympic Village Block Complete

The first of the 11 residential blocks within the London 2012 Olympic Village has been structurally completed.

The announcement came on the eve of 1,000 days to go to the Olympic Games.

The Village will be home to 23,000 athletes and officials during the Games. As well as residential apartments there will be shops, restaurants, medical and leisure facilities, and large areas of open spaces.

After the Games the Village will be transformed into 2,800 new homes, including 1,379 affordable homes and housing for sale and rent. The development will become part of the overall Stratford City regeneration scheme.

This first residential block is made up of almost 300 new houses in seven buildings. Work has now started on the external cladding of the buildings and work on the interiors is due to begin next year.

Olympic Delivery Authority Director of Property Ralph Luck said: "In 1,000 days time the world's best athletes will have arrived at the Olympic Village. With the structural completion of the first buildings we are on track to deliver a first-class Village to help them prepare for the world’s biggest sporting event.

"The Olympic Village will be one of the strongest legacies from the Games. The completion of these buildings also gives us an exciting glimpse of the quality new homes we are delivering for Londoners, together with new parks, public squares and community facilities."

The 11 residential plots in the Olympic Village are each made up of 6–8 buildings built in a rectangular layout around a traditional courtyard area. Construction work is also underway on the remaining ten residential plots.
