Youngsters at Portsmouth Grammar School joined Kier Southern and local historian Bob Hind to celebrate the start of work on the school’s cutting edge new science facility.

The Year 7 pupils created a unique record of life in 2009 by participating in a ‘Fill the Time Capsule’ competition which was organised by the school’s history department. The competition asked the students a to compile a list of items that reflect the school, the city and the school’s particular affiliation with science to be placed in a time capsule which would be buried on the site of the new science centre.

The new multi-million pound facility, which is due to be completed in August next year, will replace the existing 1950's block and provide over 3,000sq m of teaching space across three floors. In addition to modern science laboratories and prep rooms, the new centre will include an open plan atrium, exhibition space and a science theatre, further strengthening the Portsmouth Grammar School’s reputation as one of the south’s premier science teaching facilities.

A total of 27 items including coins, stamps, newspapers, a Harry Potter novel, a credit card and a mobile phone were chosen from the lists.
