Interserve, the services, maintenance and building group has completed, on behalf of the Highways Agency, the final stage of the A1 Peterborough to Blyth Junction Improvement scheme, which is being officially opened on Tuesday 20 October 2009.

The A1 Trunk Road is a north-south regional route of strategic importance connecting the two sections of the A1(M) at Peterborough in the south and Blyth in the north.

In the four-year project, the single level roundabouts were replaced with grade-separated junctions to reduce congestion, queuing and delays and to improve a poor safety record.

Interserve has worked with key stakeholders to minimise the environmental impact on the sites whilst achieving cost savings, improved safety and buildability.

David Paterson, Managing Director of Interserve's Project Services Division, said: "We are very proud to have completed the sixth and final stage in this project on behalf of the Highways Agency. The significant benefits of the development of this road will be shared by local residents and road users."
