Inspace, Willmott Dixon Group's social housing specialist that provides repair and maintenance services to Berneslai Homes, has been appointed to bring more houses in Barnsley up to the Decent Homes standard.

Berneslai Homes has awarded the company a £1.8 million contract to improve 202 homes in Hoyland Common by replacing elements like kitchens, bathrooms, windows, doors, plus heating and ventilation.

The modernisation will be completed by February 2010 and brings to 2409 the number of homes in Barnsley that Inspace has brought up to the Decent Homes standard for Berneslai Homes since 2003.

Barnsley General Manager Dave Coldwell said: "We'll be working closely with residents to ensure that we carry out these important improvements while causing as little disruption to their lives as possible."

The work comes at a time when Inspace has recently completed Barnsley’s first retro-fit of a home to create a low carbon, energy efficient blue print for existing social housing stock. The company equipped a semi-detached house in Wilthorpe with solar hot water, new gas boiler, cavity wall insulation, internal insulation and double glazing to turn it from an E rating in environmental impact and energy efficiency to at least a C rating.
