Carno Community Centre, in Mid Wales, has replaced its old inefficient oil boiler with a new, more environmentally friendly wood pellet burner thanks to a £15,000 grant from energy company E.ON.

As well as providing heating and hot water, the centre will use the boiler to raise awareness of energy and the environment and the use of wood as a fuel to reduce carbon emissions among its users.

Alan Humphreys, the Centre Administrator, said: "Everyone at the Centre is grateful that with the help of E.ON we've been able to convert to a more environmentally friendly system.

"In doing so we've not only reduced our carbon footprint, but the wood pellets are proving a more economic alternative to the oil fuelled boiler that's been replaced."

Tony Jenkin Jones, Community Relations Executive with E.ON, said: "We're delighted we could help the Community Centre with this project, especially as the pellet boiler is expected to save the emission of around 16 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.

"It'll also be made available as a teaching aid to the local primary school and other groups, which is a great way to teach the next generation about reducing our energy consumption."
