More than 18 months of studying has paid off for a Bromsgrove man who has seen his hard work rewarded with a top construction industry qualification.

Ian Felton, a senior site manager for Birmingham-based Lovell, has joined an elite band by achieving an NVQ Level 5 in Construction Management.

The qualification, which has been developed by the National House Building Council (NHBC), allows senior managers working in the construction industry to gain formal accreditation for their management skills, technical knowledge and competence.


Ian, 41, who joined Lovell in 2005, was offered the chance to study for the NVQ Level 5 qualification by the company having previously attained his Level 4 while working for a former employer.

"I've worked in construction since leaving school and training has always been something I've enjoyed," explained Ian, who began his career as a carpenter. "When I was asked if I would be interested in studying for the qualification, I didn't hesitate in saying yes."

The NVQ Level 5 course is split up into separate modules which cover a number of subjects including health and safety, controlling projects, managing teams and individuals, enhancing working relationships and developing staff. Ian had to demonstrate his understanding of each area by providing practical examples from his day-to-day work on site. His work was then marked by an independent assessor from the NHBC.
