Green Hotel Sets New Environmental Standards

Construction News Image
Premier Inn, one the UK's largest hotel operators, is to set new industry standards for sustainable design and construction in the hotel sector with its new Tamworth hotel in Staffordshire, now under construction and opening in December.

The green hotel brings together the very best environmental initiatives from Premier Inn's parent company Whitbread, whose approach to the environment is focused on reducing wastage and increasing efficiency.

The site will reduce energy consumption by up to 80% and is a test-bed for Premier Inn to trial the best green technologies currently available, to see which are viable for their hotels in the future. With Premier Inn's target of 55,000 bedrooms within five years, the Tamworth scheme has the potential to transform how Premier Inn procures property and construction services.

Alan Parker, CEO of Whitbread, said: "This hotel is truly ground-breaking in that this combination of technologies has never been used before in the UK. They were chosen from a range of initiatives that we believe deliver the most positive social and environmental impact on future hotel builds.

"Hotel energy use is a complex equation and we have taken a first step in deploying all technologies available to us, in order that we get it just right. This will allow us in the future to implement sustainable practices across our wider estate."
