Go-Ahead For £51m Bypass

Almost 26,000 fewer vehicles a day will pass through two North West villages after the construction of a £51m bypass was given the go-ahead by Transport Minister Rosie Winterton yesterday.

The 5km Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley bypass, to be built with more than £48m of Government funding, will cut congestion and significantly improve the environment in the two villages. The scheme will also improve access to local businesses as well as improve links from other towns in the area to Manchester and Manchester Airport.

Rosie Winterton said: "We are committed to investing in local transport. This bypass will really improve the environment in Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley while cutting congestion, reducing delays and improving access for communities and businesses in southern Manchester and north east Cheshire.

"The road will also improve the reliability of local bus services as well as access to Manchester Airport and the Alderley Park Regional Employment Site, which will help facilitate expansion and job creation."

The Department for Transport will provide £48.224m with Cheshire County Council meeting the remained of the total £51.648m cost. Works are due to commence in August with the scheme opening in 2011.

Cheshire County Council will introduce complementary traffic management measures in Alderley Edge village, providing an enhanced and safer environment for those who live and work in the area.
