Council chiefs in Wales are in discussions to select a preferred developer for a top name hotel which is being planned at Llanelli's Machynys Golf Club, Carmarthenshire.

A four-star development with panoramic views of the course is being proposed on land near the access road to the golf club.

The county council's Executive Board will be asked to name the developers of the golf course as special purchasers of the land, when they meet on Monday.

The move would give them the go-ahead to begin infilling works at the site, before construction can get underway.


The land, which is jointly owned by the council and the Welsh Assembly, is part of the Llanelli Waterside project.

Developers say the area is an ideal location for a top quality hotel, with Carmarthenshire's growing reputation as a tourist destination and the multi-million pound Scarlets stadium being built nearby.

Council Chief Executive Mark James said: "This is a high quality development which would bring tremendous benefits, not only to Llanelli, but the whole of Carmarthenshire.

"The development of the site could only be realistically achieved with the golf course operator, as there would be combined restaurants and spa facilities.

"They are already working with an internationally renowned branded hotel on a four star golf resort hotel.

"We are recommending that the golf course developers be selected as the preferred developer as they have a proven track record and have delivered successfully in the past."
