Disruption to Brentwood drivers and commuters during the construction of Crossrail has been minimised, due to negotiations by Brentwood Borough Council.
The Council has secured that Hunter Avenue car park will not be used by the developers for Crossrail and that approximately half of Friars Avenue car park will still be open for use.
The Crossrail Bill has reached the stage of progressing through the House of Lords Select Committee. The Select Committee of the House of Commons has already concluded that Crossrail would indeed go ahead and that the terminus for the Eastern side would be Shenfield.
However, the Council still had issues regarding some construction points and the loss of car parking in Shenfield, which had not moved forward in dealings with the developers themselves.
Brentwood Borough Council therefore submitted a Petition to the House of Lords, having also done so at the House of Commons in order to support the rights of residents, local businesses and commuters and minimise the inconvenience during the construction period.
It had been the position of the developers for Crossrail that they would be taking up half of the Council’s off-street car park in Hunter Avenue and the whole of the off-street car park in Friars Avenue.
Following the Council's submission of its Petition to the House of Lords, negotiations with the developers have now secured that the Hunter Avenue car park will not be used at all by the developers and approximately half of the Friars Avenue car park will still be open for use.
Cllr Brandon Lewis, Leader of the Council, said: "This represents a major success for the Borough and justifies the persistence of the Council in continuing the fight to the House of Lords Select Committee stage of the Bill."
