Plans Move Forward For Kingswood Heath Community Centre

Construction News Image

A planning application has been lodged for a new community centre at Kingswood Heath, proposing the conversion of an existing hardstanding next to Camulos Academy on Whitmore Drive into a modern, adaptable space for local residents.

The scheme would be financed through Section 106 contributions from developers, with Myland Community Council committing a further £130,000 to help deliver the project.

Shaped by a programme of public consultation, the proposals follow strong community backing for a local hub, with residents indicating they would use the venue for activities, events and social gatherings.

Colchester City Council appointed Barefoot and Gilles Architects to draw up the plans, working alongside local councillors, community groups and clubs to ensure the design meets local needs and remains within budget.

The building would feature a multi-purpose main hall for up to 100 people, a kitchen, smaller meeting and office spaces, and accessible facilities. A Changing Places facility is also included, providing specialist toilet and changing provision for people with complex disabilities.

Outside, the design includes 36 car parking spaces, room for up to 10 bicycles, rooftop solar panels and new landscaping to enhance biodiversity.

The centre is intended to offer a welcoming place for residents to come together, take part in activities and build connections within the community.

The application will now progress through the standard planning process. If permission is granted, construction is expected to take around 12 months.

Cllr David King, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Public Protection and Communities, said: "We've worked closely with local groups and councillors, with the help of Myland Community Council, to shape plans for a flexible, welcoming space that will meet the needs of the community now and in the future."
