Special Formwork has highlighted a significant milestone in its project history with the successful design and delivery of a bespoke Vertical 90° Elbow formwork system for the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station.
Delivered prior to the company's recently completed Triple Bifurcation project, the Vertical 90° Elbow formwork represented a major temporary works solution and a critical step in the evolution of Special Formwork's complex engineering capabilities. The system required precise geometric control, tight fitment tolerances and robust structural performance to withstand complex loading conditions, all supported by a highly coordinated design-to-manufacture process.
The project demanded close collaboration across engineering, design and manufacturing teams to ensure accuracy, reliability and buildability within the constraints of a highly regulated nuclear environment. From initial concept through to fabrication and delivery, the formwork system was developed to meet stringent technical and safety requirements.
Beyond its immediate success, the Hinkley Point C solution became an important learning platform for future projects. Key insights gained around trial assembly, tolerance management, connection detailing and logistics planning were carried forward and further refined during the later Triple Bifurcation scheme. This commitment to continuous improvement enabled the team to apply proven methodologies to an even more complex engineering challenge.
