A major milestone has been reached on Skanska's A428 improvement scheme, as the project team connected the new A428 and B1040 roads over a newly constructed bridge and opened it to traffic last weekend.
The achievement marks a crucial step forward in the project, enabling access to part of the mainline route of the A428. This is important for facilitating the movement of earthworks material needed to build the new western embankment at the Caxton Gibbet junction.
Construction on the £810 million National Highways scheme began in January 2024 and has continued despite last year's challenging weather conditions. The progress so far has been described as a testament to strong teamwork and coordination between suppliers and site teams.
Key works completed to reach this stage include the excavation of 2km of drainage ditches, installation of 2.5km of drainage pipes and 350 drainage gullies and laying of 13,500 tonnes of surfacing materials. Additionally, the team installed 4km of new kerbing, including wildlife-friendly kerbs, and 10km of ducts for diverted services and new street lighting.
Next on the agenda for the project is the safe completion of realigned junctions at Caxton Gibbet and Cambridge Road in St Neots. This will enable full access along 8.2km of the future A421 dual carriageway.
Willie McCormick, Skanska Project Director said: "This is a significant milestone on the A428 project and an amazing achievement by the East Delivery Team and supply chain partners. A real credit to teamwork and collaboration. I am immensely proud!"
