National Highways has reached a key milestone in the refurbishment scheme of the A63 Myton Swing Bridge in Hull, with the installation of all four bearings on the landmark structure.
The replacement of the bearings is an important part of the programme of repairs and renewals of the bridge, which carries the A63 over the River Hull.
National Highways Project Manager Elvis Agbodo said: "Several bridge swings have been successfully undertaken to test the bridge and the new bearings and it is operating very well. Successfully completing the replacement of the bearings on this complex moving bridge in a safe and timely way is a very significant milestone in the delivery of the overall project.
"This was achieved through effective collaboration and teamwork of everyone involved. Thank you to all our contractors and partners on this scheme.
"There is still quite a bit of work to do, but this is great news and we are definitely on the home straight now."
In November, National Highways began major repairs on the structure including work on the bridge joints and bearings, renewal of waterproofing, barrier, and lighting improvements. These repairs will help to reduce the number of unplanned repairs on the bridge in the future.
To allow this to be carried out safely, a series of weekend closures have been in place since 23 June, with the final weekend closure due between Friday 28 July – Monday 31 July.
