Centrica To Slash Thousands Of Jobs As Part Of Savings Programme

Construction News Image
Thousands of jobs are set to be cut at Centrica as the company embarks on a multi-million pound efficiency savings programme.

The utilities firm has revealed it will slash a total of 3,000 jobs in 2016, generating £200 million in savings towards its £750 million per annum cost efficiency initiative.

Around 800 jobs have already been cut within the first three months of the year at British Gas.

However, Brian Strutton, GMB's National Secretary, said staff at the company are "confused and disillusioned, managers don't know if they're staying or going and the only word from the top is cut, cut, cut."

"Centrica's main operating business, British Gas, is going through considerable management upheaval while trying to implement major cost and headcount reductions which is putting the whole business under real strain and it is creaking," he said.

"Announcing even more job losses will be a bitter blow and GMB will be consulting with shop stewards and reps to discuss what steps to take."
