Network Rail has completed part of a railway electrification project on the Great Western Main Line between Bath and Bristol.

The work is part of the company's £40 billion Railway Upgrade Plan to deliver an improved railway with more reliable infrastructure and better facilities.

The project began on 02 April and involved:

• Lowering the tracks at Keynsham station to protect a historic footbridge and creating extra space needed for overhead electric lines.

• Platform modifications at the station.

• Replacing the tracks at Oldfield Park station.

• Installing the foundations for the overhead electric lines.

Around 10,000 tons of ballast were also installed as part of the project along with 1,500 new railway sleepers.

Andy Haynes, Network Rail's project director for the west of England, said: "I'm pleased to say that following our successful track lowering work in Bath last summer, this next stage of the improvement work has also now completed meaning that passengers and residents are another step closer to the benefits that the electrification of the railway will bring."
