Britcon Secures £800,000 Contract

Construction News Image
Britcon has won a £800,000 contract to refurbish a listed building for the University of Huddersfield.

The Grade II Sir John Ramsden Court building is to be redeveloped into 6,785sq ft of office accommodation from 12 existing residential flats.

The project is part of an overall redevelopment of the University's Queensgate campus.

The civil engineering contractor secured the deal via the YORbuild framework.

Building surveyors firm AHR Huddersfield is acting as project manager for the development.

Britcon will remove the internal apartments and install modern, open plan office accommodation over three floors, in addition to carrying out structural, mechanical and engineering/finishing works.

Ian Chapman, Regional Manager at Britcon, said: "We are delighted to secure another contract in the education sector where we have significant expertise.

"The project presents a number of logistical challenges because of its canal side setting and we are working closely with the Canal and River Trust.

"We are also working closely with the University to ensure internal fixtures support department functionality."

Tim Hosker, Deputy Director of Estates at the University of Huddersfield added: "The use of the building as office accommodation will fulfil a need and meet a shortfall for this type of accommodation in the university."

The project is expected to be completed by February 2016.
