Overnight Closures On A1 For Bridge Installation

Overnight closures have been announced on the A1 in North Yorkshire due to a construction project.

A new bridge is to be developed to form part of the A1 Leeming to Barton major road scheme.

The A1 will be closed on 15 August and 22 August in both directions from 8pm to 10am between Scotch Corner and the A1(M) Junction 56.

Highways England Project Manager, Tim Howard, said: "This is a significant milestone for the scheme and a complex piece of engineering. Large cranes will be used to install steel girders weighing more than 112 tonnes therefore it is essential we close sections of the motorway to install them safely."

The new Kneeton Hall Bridge will be built alongside the existing bridge to ensure continuous access for road users while major work to upgrade the A1 to motorway standard between Leeming and Barton takes place.

The old bridge will be demolished at a later date.

When the scheme opens to traffic in 2017, journey times between Leeming and Barton are expected to be reduced by approximately 20%.
