A new £5.9 million sixth-form centre at Sandwell College is complete.
Following detailed design and planning work carried out by Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council and Sandwell College the new 'Central Sixth' will support a variety of arts-based activities.
Interserve has handed over the project to Sandwell Futures Ltd on time and under budget, having reduced costs throughout the build programme. Seventy per cent of the sub contractors used by the company on the scheme were from the Birmingham area and at one stage of the build programme 11 per cent of the work force were apprentices.
The works consisted of internal demolition of an existing theatre and 100 metres of cantilevered access ramp to allow for the remodelling of the ground floor entrance and new classroom pods. On the building’s upper four floors, new classrooms, business hubs, IT Suites and science and art departments have also been created.
