Essential refurbishment to a Peterborough bridge will be completed on time and within budget, with road restrictions cleared in time for Christmas.
Work began on Longthorpe bridge in August and is the last in a series of extensive bridge refurbishments on the A1260 Nene parkway that have taken place over the last five years.
All road restrictions that have been in place during the works will be lifted by Tuesday 24th December 2013.
The bridge which carries Thorpe Road over the Nene parkway has undergone concrete repairs, the replacement of bridge bearings and reconstruction of the pier tops which support the bridge deck. As part of the repairs the bridge had to be jacked up off its existing supports using huge steel temporary brackets.
The opportunity was also taken to carry out other maintanence on the stretch of road including gully replacements and re-painting road lines.
Simon Machen, Director of Growth and Regeneration at Peterborough City Council, said: "We would like to thank local residents and the travelling public for their patience during these essential works. We have completed all refurbishments within our original timeframe and all road restrictions will be removed by Christmas Eve.
"The successful completion of works on the bridges that pass over the Nene parkway will ensure their longevity and limit any future closures to a minimum."
