Over 700 New Homes Built In Peterborough Last Year

More than 700 new homes were built in Peterborough during the last financial year according to research by Peterborough City Council.

Seven hundred and sixty seven new homes were built across Peterborough between April 2011 and March 2012 -54 more than in 2010/11.

Of the new homes built, 114 (15 per cent) were affordable. Thirty-six met the Lifetime Homes standard, which means that the properties meet strict design criteria around accessibility and adaptability.

Overall, there has been a 58 per cent increase in the number of new market homes built last year when compared to the number of new market homes completed for the previous year.

Councillor Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council, said: "These figures demonstrate our commitment to providing the infrastructure to grow Peterborough. As the number of new homes built nationally continues to falter, it is good news to see Peterborough's delivery of new homes is on the increase.

"The creation of 767 new homes is a fantastic achievement, particularly because 57 per cent of these properties were built on previously developed brownfield land adding to our Environmental Capital credentials. This surge in the number of market homes completed indicates an increased confidence in the local housing market and our capacity to respond to growth.

"It is important that we provide the types of homes that our residents need whether these are larger, more prestigious homes, or more affordable housing. We work closely with housing associations, developers and the Homes and Communities Agency, which allocates government funding for affordable housing, to understand the need for this type of home in Peterborough and to ensure enough are provided.

"About 250 new affordable homes will be built in Peterborough this year. This is great news for the city, and will help ensure a continued supply of much needed housing over the coming years."
