MP Diane Abbott has opened a new state-of-the-art extra care scheme in Warwick Grove, Hackney.

Developed by Hackney-based Housing Charity, Newlon Housing Trust and managed by specialist staff from Outward and Hackney Council, Century Court provides 40 homes and a range of care, support and additional facilities for residents and the local elderly community.

Century Court was the only scheme in London to be awarded funding from an £80 million Department of Health fund to help meet the increased demand for more extra care homes nationally.

The scheme provides a wide range of additional facilities and services including a communal café and large lounge/function room, which will be managed in partnership with Age UK Hackney. There is also a treatment room, hairdressing service, a small shop and two communal balconies, including a large terrace with beautiful views over the River Lea down to the Olympic Park and Docklands.

Mansell has donated 50 hours of employee time to benefit the residents along with a gift of £300 for the resident’s café.

Ms Abbott said: "I am really excited to open Century Court. Successful housing for the elderly is about providing flexible care and support, coupled with additional facilities to meet people’s actual needs, rather than imposing 'one size fits all' approaches. This is an aspiration achieved by Century Court."
