The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has announced that Saxon Weald and Eastbourne Borough Council have been successful in a bid for nearly £6.2 million grant funding to develop an extra care scheme in Langney.

Derry Court and the land adjacent to it, owned by East Sussex County Council, will be developed together to achieve this purpose built scheme.

Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet spokesperson for community services, Councillor Bannister, said: "I am delighted that Eastbourne Borough Council has successfully worked in partnership with East Sussex County Council and the charitable housing association Saxon Weald and together have secured a grant of nearly £6.2 million from the HCA towards the cost of this £9.7 million purpose-built, and much needed, extra care scheme."

The development, in Langney, is forecast to provide 62 high-quality self-contained apartments for older people who have an assessed care need and require support with daily living. Care and support will be available from on-site staff at all times.

The scheme will include a variety of communal facilities including a restaurant; lounge; and multi purpose activity rooms. Some of which will be available for use by the local community. Planning permission has been granted and work is due to start on site in March 2010.
