GMB Welcomes Decision To Base Smart Meters Jobs In Leeds

GMB has welcomed the decision by British Gas to use its Leeds depot in Canal Street as the base for installation of new smart meters.

The site was due to see rationalisation as British Gas Energy and British Gas Services were due to merge with possible job losses.

Gary Baker, GMB Regional Officer, said: "The merger into a single British Gas entity in Leeds was always going to mean that the company was going to seek to find efficiencies. This obviously had given rise to concern about job losses amongst GMB members employed at the Leeds Canal street depot.

"It is a boost for the workforce in Leeds. Putting the smart metering work into Leeds is a vote confidence in the employees. Smart metering is essential in the future fight against climate change and it is great to see that our community is getting some tangible benefit from the green jobs agenda."

The decision by British Gas also fits in with GMB seeking rules that smart meters be installed by a workforce trusted by the public.
